Communal meals bring a group together. After work it is a time to share ideas, experiences and accomplishments. After two days of building tables at Comanche Creek Millworks, which integrated beetle kill lumber with found institutional tables, the Northrup’s invited us into their house to have meal with them. Rebecca prepared a generous spread of salads and fruit, Kevan grilled hot dogs and burgers. We all ate around the families harvest table that Kevan and his sons made out of beetle kill lumber they milled on their sawmill. After working and learning from McCabe, Carsten, and Kevan, we were able to take a break and share our experiences over a meal. It was at this point that I realized that we made an important connection in Strasburg, Colorado, through investment in people and experiences, one moves beyond being a traveler and toward having a stake in the community.
