Native Americans alive today are survivors of genocide. The case of the Cherokee in particular is one that perfectly outlines how politically disadvantaged groups can be terribly mistreated by dominant groups. In the southeast they were guilty of merely being "in the way" of Anglo interests and settlement, so they were forced far away to Oklahoma by foot. Later, in places where oil was found in Oklahoma, they'd be moved again so that white Oklahomans could be the ones to get rich from the resource. No amount of apologizing or repatriation can fix this.
