I’m interested in Robert Smithson’s conversation of displacement. Instead of transferring the land indoors, I decided to record our group clapping after critiques, and apply this sound-clip to a slideshow of landscape photos https://vimeo.com/166474147.

Clapping is a positive way of showing both respect and positive support to our classmates. However, in other aspects it acts as a leveling device: everyone gets applause no matter the quality of our work.

This approval inserted into a string of images featuring mountains, trees, and sky laces the natural environment with a presentational performative atmosphere, as well as an air of indifference. The mountains don’t give a damn about how we perceive them. Like a laugh-track, an applause-track triggers a certain emotional response, however the receptiveness of the track and images turns the response vapid and mundane.
