I spent the majority of my free time in Santa Fe in the cathedral basilica. My time in both and church and the the two prior weeks of field school further enhanced my appreciation of solitude, and venues that allow that. Few public spaces offer sanction for privacy. Whenever in a new town, wandering, I am quick to seek out a library or church. Though the excitement of publicity may be nice for a little while, I often prefer to just exist in quiet places. But not a place that is quiet because of a sort of repression of noise, but rather a place where noise just doesn’t want to be. Though it may be frowned upon to be loud and boisterous in a church or library, most people are quiet simply because they want to be. There is a sense of community and consent in the privacy of each individual.
