We visited Cano's castle today. Here I began thinking about the differences in the way the rural and urban think of and use material. In these rural environments whether through necessity or experience, people are given the agency to create and design their own environments. Ron, in his lecture, mentioned that everyone who lives in these communities is a Jack of all trades. Not only do these environments force people to be their own designers, they give people a deeper connection to material. A sign is no longer defined by its intended design, it can be transmuted back into a slab of metal for tinning a roof. A soda can no longer hold liquid, it is now flattened to protect the walls of your home.
