Fort Robinson/Pine Ridge

An emotional day filled with a wide array of landscapes beginning with waking up in the army barracks of Fort Robinson, NE. On the grounds of which Crazy Horse was stabbed in the back by a soldiers bayonet after a failed negotiation. Getting on the road we followed the actual Pine Ridge formation towards the reservation. Crossing into South Dakota we drove through White Clay, a town with a population of 14 consisting of a few homes and 4 liquor stores that service many of the people of the Pine Ridge community in which alcohol is prohibited and an unemployment rate of 80-90%. Next we spent time at the Red Cloud Indian School and then on to the Wounded Knee Massacre site. The massacre and burial site at Wounded Knee was an emotional place merging a sacred mourning site with tourism, one of the only things that brings in outside money to the community.
