We spent most of our time on the road today, driving down to Santa Fe, New Mexico. We stopped in what seemed to be a dying small town. So many of the shops were closed and/or vacated. I wondered how long it would be before a Walmart moved in and took over the whole town center. I don’t know exactly how I feel about situations like this. Visually, of course, it’s a depressing sight. Depressing, too, is the thought of all of the people affected by the transition. However, under that surface there is the thought that this is a natural process, and as sad as it may be for one side of the coin, the process must be accepted to some extent. This is not to say one ought to lay on their back and let the world pass by, passively. But it is in one’s own interest to understand that, even if the thought is kept way back in the mind, these processes are natural. As sad as they may be, there is no evil or injustice in them.
